Do you give your plants a good shower/rinse every now and then? I’m sharing all the benefits and reasons why you should be showering your plants in this post.
Shower?
Yes, shower! Regardless of size or location. I mean literal shower. Take into the shower/bathtub, sink or hose outside with water for 3-4 minutes.
Why though?
I have to admit, showering my plants came intuitively to me. It just made sense to do at every watering because it was a faster way to clean the foliage and leave it shiny.
But there are actual benefits I later learned. Here are the main reasons and benefits you should be showering your plant:
- Cleans foliage– instead of wiping every leaf, cut this chore in half!
- Removes pests– If you’ve dealt with pests you know, the best thing you can do is catch them early and prevent! If you are showering your plant even once a month, you’re guaranteed to stay ahead of the game and notice anything suspicious early.
- Increases humidity on the plant (temporarily of course)
- Saturates the soil– this will ensure all the roots get a proper drink of water and all the water they actually need. I’ve posted about this on socials quite a bit because watering only until water begins to drain is not enough water.

Tips for a good and efficient plant shower
- Always use lukewarm water as too hot or too cold will shock the roots
- Before you shower, ensure your plant’s pot has plenty of drainage holes on the bottom
- Secure your shower or sink’s drain to keep any soil or soil amendments from going down it (this can be very bad for your plumbing)
- Only shower your plant at the time they are due for watering
- I do this every watering with my plants, which is time consuming, if you’re short on time I recommend at least once a month
Finally, no, you will not overwater by showering your plant. Overwatering is in reference to the frequency of watering, not amount of water per watering. Read more about this here.
